Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of the male hormone testosterone, is the enemy of hair follicles on your head. ... For many years, scientists thought that andro-genetic alopecia was caused by the predominance of the male sex hormone, testosterone, which women also have in trace amounts under normal conditions.
The hormonal process of testosterone converting to DHT, which then harms hair follicles, happens in both men and women. Under normal conditions, women have a minute fraction of the level of testosterone that men have, but even a lower level can cause DHT- triggered hair loss in women.
The most accepted explanation is that adrenergic receptors on hair follicles, where hairs actually grow from, get activated by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone. When these receptors are activated, the hairs grow more slowly and the hairs that do grow get thinner. Hair follicles that are sensitive to DHT begin to miniaturize, shortening the lifespan of each hair follicle affected. In some patients with a genetic predisposition to hair loss, a group of hormones called androgens interferes with the growth cycle of the hair. These androgen hormones-testosterone, Androsteinedione, and Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)- are dominant hormones in men, but are present in women to a lesser degree. Andro-genetic alopecia is a common form of hair loss in both men and women. In men, this condition is also known as male-pattern baldness. But while testosterone is at the core of the balding process, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is now thought to be the main culprit.
